Ernst Schmidheiny Symposium

A personal perspective from Nathaly Bachmann on growth, with courage and joy.

This discouraged debate on growth makes me think. Because in my eyes what has happened is un-Swiss and anything but progressive for the future of the next generation. It seems to me that the discussion is being conducted in a very “clumsy” manner.

If you believe in growth, you belong to “Ambitious Switzerland”; if you are critical of growth, you flirt with “Ballenberg Switzerland”.

Shouldn’t we rather ask ourselves: how do we want to live, which values are decisive in growth?

We may not all have the same view of growth, but stagnation is not the solution – every child knows this and discovers the world step by step.

But the power of democracy lies in dialogue, and so I appeal for a lively debate, which I am passionately pursuing with the StrategieDialog21.

I am proud of our liberal system, which has made us what Switzerland is today and what we are today. But freedom also means responsibility. And it is the responsibility of all of us to express our opinions. This in turn means dealing with constant contradictions. And also to expose ourselves and ask questions:

Curious, responsible, creative, with courage to fail and gratitude!
